Meeting with Maggie Crawford, participant of the 1969 DSU sit-in.
Whether your group consists of university faculty learning communities and interdisciplinary research teams, lifelong learning and Road Scholar travel cohorts, museum, historical society, and cultural institution professionals, corporate and non-profit board leadership retreats, regional blues societies, folklore associations, and writing collectives, philanthropic foundations and grant-making trustee boards, or private social clubs, reunion groups, and adventurous circles of friends seeking a deeper journey, we can create an unforgettable experience shaped specifically for your group’s traveling purpose.
Tour with Dr. Truman through the New World District in Clarksdale.
Your cultural immersion excursions can be tailored around anything your group desires—from museum visits, expert guest lectures, and culinary food tours to deep-dive itineraries like a strictly Muddy Waters pilgrimage, an in-depth blues history exploration, a powerful Civil Rights journey, or an authentic juke joint tour experiencing local Delta blues musicians firsthand.
Dr. Mandy Truman, Director of the Delta Center for Culture and Learning, has spent nearly a decade studying the Mississippi Delta as a cultural geographer. Driven by a passion for direct engagement, she works closely with the individuals and community members who carry the region's living heritage to ensure firsthand knowledge is brought to the forefront. When planning an excursion, Dr. Truman collaborates directly with these local tradition-bearers so that the community tells its own stories, creating a rare and profoundly authentic experience.
To begin planning your unique group experience, complete the form below to set up an initial meeting with Dr. Truman. She will research, organize, and plan your excursion, communicating with you every step of the way until your arrival in the Delta. College and university faculty interested in integrating excursions into their courses are encouraged to submit the information form during the syllabus development stage. If your course syllabus has already been finalized, email to mtruman@deltastate.edu.
